Taekwondo (also spelled tae kwon do or taekwon-do) is a martial art and combat sport originating in Korea. Having become one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world, it is the national sport of Korea and one form of sparring, shihap kyeorugi, is an Olympic sporting event.
In Korean, derived from hanja, tae (跆) means to kick or strike with the foot"; kwon (拳) means "fist or to strike with the hand"; and do (道) means "way". Hence, taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and hand". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the martial art. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy.
Although there are great doctrinal and technical differences among public and private taekwondo organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. In sparring, turning (roundhouse), 45 degree, front, axe, reverse turning and side kicks are most often used; advanced kicks include jump, spin, and skip kicks, often in combination. Taekwondo training also includes a system of blocks, punches, open-handed strikes, various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and some joint locks.
KENDO Art of the Samurai
Kendo means "way of the sword" and is the traditional martial art of Japanese fencing. Kendo players fence with flexible bamboo practice swords using both the edge and point of the sword to hit targets on their opponent's armor. The four main targets are the top of the head, the throat, the abdomen and the wrist.
In budo, Japanese martial arts, "do" refers to a path or way to self-improvement through martial training. Kendo teaches not only physical fencing techniques but also a philosophy which is inherent to budo. Kendo develops strong spirit, positive attitude and respect for others

These camps are designed to keep kids busy and active throughout their school breaks. With good visual, mental and physical stimulation through games, Martial Arts and crafts, we keep the kids busy from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM . We spend the first half of each day at the school working on our martial arts program and all the wonderful side effects that come with it. We build up their self esteem, respect, confidence and patience. We also spend the morning playing martial art themed games, doing crafts and of course, having fun.
We spend the second half of our day having more fun!!! We leave on our day trips right after lunch. We go to fun locations like swimming, many other fun activities. These trips are fully supervised by adult staff and are very safe. All day trips are included in the cost of your camp. Once we return from our day trip, we spend the last portion of the day doing another martial arts class.
These full day camps are open to any child, regardless of martial arts experience, from the ages of 5 to 13. Bring your friends, your family, anyone who wants to spend the summer having fun and learning martial arts.
We cap the size of our camps so that we can maintain a safe environment as well as keep our student to instructor ratio very low. All camps are run by practicing, certified adult black belt instructors. These camps fill up fast and sell out every year. Don't delay if you want to put your child in Thornhill's favorite martial arts fun camp.
Children need to bring their own lunch, lots of snacks and fluids (no nuts please, we are a nut free school), and a great attitude. At the beginning of each week, we provide a schedule for the week that gives information on what we are doing and if you need to bring anything else such as sunscreen, towel, bathing suit, etc.
